Arsenal are set to provide competition to West Ham United in the pursuit of Lille striker Jonathan David, according to Sky Sport CH.
The Gunners are likely to bolster the attacking department ahead of next season. A marquee striker could be a top priority for manager Mikel Arteta.
RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has a tempting release clause worth £58 million in his contract, and Arsenal could revive their long-term interest.
However, the club could pursue another striker. David will be a free agent when his Lille contract expires on June 30.
The Hammers have a concrete interest in signing the former Gent man. Barcelona have also followed the striker for some time, but are unlikely to compete financially.
It could take a package of £16.5 million for a long-term contract with signing-on fees and performance bonuses included.
Arsenal are also in the mix. An offer is ‘expected’ in the ‘coming weeks’ once the club appoints Andrea Berta as their sporting director.
Arsenal should sign David alongside Sesko this summer
The Gunners were determined to bring Sesko to the Premier League last summer, but he ended up penning a new deal at Leipzig without a buy clause.
However, the striker has now formally agreed on a release clause. The affordable figure should persuade Arsenal to make a concrete approach later this year.
Alongside Sesko, the Gunners need to push for another striker signing, considering Gabriel Jesus is out for the long term due to a serious knee injury.
Kai Havertz has been unconvincing while leading the attack. He has been prone to missing clear-cut chances. His future at Arsenal could be in midfield.
David has had a superb campaign for Lille, bagging 21 goals and nine assists in all competitions. Out of that tally, 11 goal involvements have come in the Champions League.
The 25-year-old has proven his credentials at the highest level. David has a sensational shot-to-goal conversion rate of 27 percent in Ligue 1 this term.
The Canadian star has also excelled with his link-up and hold-up play. He would represent a bargain signing for the Gunners on a free transfer this summer.
