Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing one of Europe’s best emerging strikers this summer, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Red Devils have misfired in the final third this campaign, scoring just 33 goals in 27 Premier League matches. As a result, the club are languishing 14th in the table.
The club could pursue another quality striker during the summer. The focus could once again be on an emerging talent rather than an experienced star on hefty weekly wages.
The Red Devils are reportedly interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig but face competition from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Sesko has a fixed release clause in his contract. It is currently at £58 million but could increase to around £66m based on goal contributions.
He was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last summer but decided to snub his suitors. Sesko penned a new deal with Leipzig until June 2029 without a buy clause.
However, the Slovenian star has now finalised a release clause figure with Leipzig. The relatively affordable fee should trigger plenty of interest this summer.
The former Red Bull Salzburg man has had a productive second year at Leipzig. He has already netted 17 goals and provided five assists in all competitions for the German giants.
Sesko has a stunning shot-to-goal conversion rate of 22 percent. He would be a clear upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee if he joined United ahead of next season.
The striker has a tireless work rate. Sesko likes to high-press his opponents with pace and has a strong aerial presence. He can also link-up play.
It remains to be seen whether United can persuade him to join them. The Red Devils need to win the Europa League to have any chance of playing Champions League football.
If United were to miss out, they could face an uphill battle to sign Sesko due to the long-term interest from Arsenal, who are likely to finish in the top four in the league.
