Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has sent a message to England boss Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup qualifiers this month.
Tuchel is set to announce the England squad for the first time since taking the reins. Amorim believes Harry Maguire should be part of the squad.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “If it’s enough is with the national coach. I would be really happy for him, I think he deserves [it].
“He is a great guy. I think he still needs to improve because when you are a player, you can improve every time and improve a lot of things.
“But I think his performances in the moment are quite good, and you feel he is more a leader now that can help a national team, so I hope he is in the national team in the next games.”
Maguire deserves a place in the England squad
Amorim has implemented a 3-4-3 system at United, with Maguire becoming a key component in the central centre-back spot.
The 31-year-old has been a towering presence at both ends of the pitch, dominating aerial duels and providing much-needed stability.
With Lisandro Martinez sidelined for the remainder of the season, Maguire has stepped up as the backbone of United’s defence, delivering resolute performances when it matters most.
He bagged the match-winning goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town recently.
Maguire has emphatically reclaimed his status as a leader, and it would come as no shock if Tuchel includes him in his England squad.
The centre-back last featured for the national team in September and boasts an impressive 64 caps to his name.
His vast experience could be invaluable for Tuchel, especially with the England squad expected to feature several young talents.
He was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2024 European Championship due to concerns about his fitness.
The Three Lions are set to clash with Albania and Latvia this month.
