Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Newcastle United star Alexander Isak this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo (page 2).
The Red Devils have scored only 33 goals in 27 matches in the Premier League season.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to meet expectations. The duo have scored just five league goals in the English top-flight this term.
Manager Ruben Amorim may want another marquee striker in the squad.
Barcelona are keen admirers of Isak, but they are set to face fierce competition from Premier League clubs.
Liverpool, Arsenal and United are in the race. The Red Devils reportedly want to ‘relaunch’ their project, and Isak is one of the top names on their list.
Newcastle are set to demand over £83m for the former Real Sociedad man, who has bagged 21 goals and five assists in all competitions this season.
United are unlikely to sign Isak due to budget constraints
The Red Devils made a huge outlay on Hojlund two years ago. The Dane started with promise, but his performances have drastically dipped over the past year.
Zirkzee has not provided a solution either since his move from Bologna. United could recruit another quality striker, but they may not splash the cash.
The hierarchy are expected to change their transfer policy ahead of the next transfer window. The focus could be on signing players in their early 20s.
United have been linked with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, but the club are unlikely to pursue a deal due to the huge price tag and his age.
Isak may not be a suitable target this summer. United could face roadblocks in the race for the 25-year-old described as ‘world-class‘ by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
Champions League football could be a must to persuade the Swede. United will have to win the Europa League this term to qualify for the elite competition.
The Magpies could demand a much higher figure than reported. They could easily hold out for £100m or probably more to part ways with Isak.
United have been close to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules for some time and are unlikely to afford the Swede, barring several high-profile exits.
The club are more likely to focus on an emerging striker with Premier League pedigree. Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap appears to be a viable target for the summer.
