Manchester United have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign one of Atalanta’s best players this summer, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
The Red Devils have had a tough Premier League campaign. They have accumulated only 33 points after 27 games and are languishing 14th in the table.
The club look unlikely to qualify for Europe next season unless they win the Europa League.
There could be a spending spree this summer, and Lookman is a potential target.
The 27-year-old’s relationship with Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly ‘complicated’ after the Italian questioned his penalty-taking abilities.
Lookman has another year left on his contract, but Atalanta can extend it for 12 months.
Juventus are also interested in the former Everton forward, who could be sold for £49.5 million.
Lookman has had a fine season, bagging 17 goals and seven assists in all competitions.
Lookman would be a quality acquisition for United
Manager Ruben Amorim is likely to be backed with plenty of funds this summer. The onus could be on signing players who can fit into his tactical philosophy.
Lookman would be an ideal acquisition for the Portuguese. The Nigerian star can operate on either wing. He can also play up front or in attacking midfield.
He would be perfect for the left number 10 role. The Charlton Athletic graduate works hard without possession and could easily replace Alejandro Garnacho in the squad.
Garnacho has been in and out of the manager’s plans this campaign. He could be shown the exit door as United aim for pure profit to balance their financial books.
Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have also underperformed up front, but the former is more likely to depart, with Juventus actively interested in signing him.
