Thomas Tuchel’s early days as England boss have been drama-filled.
There have been redundant arguments about his nationality and discourse surrounding his visits to Premier League games as he prepares to name his first squad for the March international games.
However, his decision to reach out to Arsenal defender Ben White raises questions about whether the German coach is misplacing his energy.
According to The Telegraph, Tuchel has spoken with White, although details of the discussion remain unknown.
Despite being one of England’s top defensive talents, White has not donned the national team shirt since March 2022.
His international hiatus began after unexpectedly leaving England’s World Cup squad in Qatar following an alleged issue involving then-assistant coach Steve Holland.
White subsequently asked not to be considered for selection, and former manager Gareth Southgate respected his wishes.
While the exact content of White’s recent conversation with Tuchel remains private, the new England boss appears keen to lure the defender back into the fold.
However, England have a wealth of right-backs, including Kyle Walker, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Rico Lewis and Tino Livramento are also pushing for a place. Given this depth, chasing after a player who voluntarily walked away from the national team seems like an unnecessary distraction.
Tuchel’s immediate priority should be solidifying a squad fully committed to England’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. If White has had a change of heart, he should make that clear publicly.
Until then, Tuchel would be wise to focus on players who have never turned their back on the national team. England has more than enough talent to cope without White.
