Liverpool have a golden chance to reassert themselves at the top of the Premier League when they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium today
Arsenal’s shock defeat to West Ham United has handed the Reds a major advantage. A win over City would stretch their lead and ensure they remain in control of their own destiny.
Man City, despite their dominance in recent years, are not the same force this season. They sit well behind Liverpool in the table, and their hopes of retaining the title are fading.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side are still dangerous, especially at home. They have won their last three league matches at the Etihad, scoring at least three goals in each.
Liverpool have looked more vulnerable in recent weeks. A 2-2 draw at Aston Villa was a missed opportunity, and their away form has been inconsistent.
Arne Slot acknowledged Manchester City’s quality, saying, “What I always expect from City since Pep [Guardiola] is there, a great football team.
“I can see them coming back already, you see the result against Newcastle.”
Liverpool have only won one of their last four matches in all competitions. They remain unbeaten away in the league this season, but their last three away games have all ended without victory.
Despite this, Liverpool have already beaten Man City once this season. Their 2-0 win at Anfield was comfortable, and they have completed the double over the reigning champions six times in history.
Slot played down the impact of Arsenal’s result on Liverpool’s approach. “Arsenal play before us, but that doesn’t make the game more difficult,” he added.
“If we constantly look at Arsenal and what other teams are doing, then that will not help us.”
Liverpool have some injury concerns. Cody Gakpo is doubtful, while Conor Bradley is unlikely to play. Joe Gomez is out long-term after undergoing hamstring surgery.
Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold were taken off in midweek as a precaution, while Darwin Nunez is under scrutiny after missing a crucial chance at Villa Park.
The task at the Etihad is clear. Win, and Liverpool will tighten their grip on the title race. Lose, and the door opens for Arsenal to close the gap again.
