The sight of James Maddison wheeling away in celebration was more than just a moment of joy for Tottenham Hotspur – it was a sign of progress.
A scrappy 1-0 win over Manchester United may not have been spectacular, but it marked a second successive victory and a clean sheet. For a side struggling to find consistency, that matters.
On a day when protests against chairman Daniel Levy took centre stage before kick-off, Spurs delivered a performance that was more functional than thrilling.
Maddison’s 12th-minute strike, pouncing on a loose ball after Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall’s effort, proved decisive.
Tottenham’s returning stars made the difference. Guglielmo Vicario’s sharp reflexes denied Alejandro Garnacho twice.
Maddison, Destiny Udogie and Brennan Johnson gave the home side much-needed quality off the bench.
Ange Postecoglou did not shy away from the significance of the win. “It was an important game for us,” he said. “We needed to put in a performance to get the result, and I think we did that.”
The Australian was particularly pleased to have his squad reinforced after months of injury struggles. “It makes a massive difference,” he added. “The fact we have them available is an enormous boost.”
By contrast, United looked threadbare. They were forced to rely on an ageing Casemiro and a bench packed with teenagers.
Despite their limitations, they pushed Spurs hard, with Garnacho missing a golden chance to level.
Postecoglou was in no mood to sympathise with his opposite number. “If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers,” he quipped. “Do that for two months, not just one game.”
The win lifts Tottenham to 12th and rekindles faint hopes of a late-season push. Postecoglou remains realistic but sees potential for progress.
“Europe is the obvious one,” he said. “We’re not happy with where we are, but circumstances have dictated that. The guys who came back today will improve us.”
The road ahead remains challenging, but for the first time in months, Spurs can see some light at the end of the tunnel.
