Manchester United should make a fresh approach for Atalanta midfielder Ederson during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have had a frustrating Premier League campaign, picking up just 29 points after 24 matches.
The club have lacked consistency in every department, and manager Ruben Amorim could be backed with a spending spree later this year.
A new defensive midfielder could be a top priority, with Casemiro poised to head for the exit door.
The Brazil international has been an unused substitute in 12 of the last 17 games for the Red Devils.
He came on against Leicester City to replace Manuel Ugarte on Friday with just seconds remaining.
Amorim has clearly stated that Casemiro does not fit into his playing style. It is only a matter of time before the midfielder moves on.
The hierarchy should pursue Ederson as Casemiro’s successor in the summer.
The 25-year-old was on the club’s radar at the beginning of the campaign. They considered signing him before opting for Manuel Ugarte.
Ugarte had a slow start under former manager Erik ten Hag, but he has become almost an undisputed starter since Amorim took charge.
The manager will ideally want another robust midfielder in the ranks. Ederson would be perfect with his ability to play in two positions.
The former Salernitana man can operate as a defensive or central midfielder. He has been one of Atalanta’s best players this term.
Ederson has a passing accuracy of 88 percent in Serie A. He has won an average of 5.1 duels per league game, alongside 5.4 recoveries and 1.4 tackles.
He has also made six goal contributions with his clever forward runs. He would be an upgrade on Casemiro and an ideal player for Amorim.
Ederson is much better in possession and distribution than Casemiro, who is past his prime. He is also very mobile and has a tireless work rate.
United failed with an offer worth £42 million plus £4m in add-ons for Ederson last summer. An improved bid of £50m could secure a deal.
However, the club must be proactive with an early agreement, considering interest in his services may only increase at the end of the season.
If the Red Devils were to haggle over the transfer fee, Atalanta could raise their valuation towards the end of the summer transfer window.
