Manchester United are exploring the market for a new left-wing-back and are ready to sign one during this transfer window.
United have set sights on signing Lecce ace Patrick Dorgu. They have begun talks with the Italian club about signing the Danish youngster.
The Red Devils have made an opening bid of £22.5 million plus £4.2m in bonuses, but their offer is short of Lecce’s £34m valuation.
United have not given up on signing the Denmark international. They have continued talks with Lecce about finding a breakthrough.
Napoli are also interested in signing Dorgu, but they are only targeting a move for him in the summer.
This could give United an advantage in signing him this month, provided they can reach an agreement with Lecce.
The Red Devils are not only eyeing Dorgu. They are also considering Benfica’s left-back Alvaro Fernandez as an option, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
They sent representatives to watch him during Benfica’s Taca da Liga final clash with Sporting CP earlier this month.
United can sign the Spaniard for £15m, which is the buy-back clause inserted into his contract when he permanently left the Red Devils for Benfica last year.
He joined Man United from Real Madrid in 2020 but did not appear for the first team despite his brilliant performances with the U-23s.
The Spanish youth international has played mainly as a left-back for Benfica but can play as a left-wing-back.
He played there during his loan spell with Preston North End and his days in the United academy.
Dorgu appears to be Man United’s priority target, but the club may step up their interest in Fernandez if they fail in their pursuit of the Denmark international.
