Next summer can’t come soon enough for United
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim pulled no punches after his team’s 3-1 home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday.
He described them as ‘the worst team maybe in the history of United’ after their sixth home defeat in 12 games this season.
While Amorim’s use of the word ‘maybe’ acknowledged that he wasn’t around in 1973/74 when a truly lousy United team was relegated, his point undoubtedly resonated.
United have shown sporadic signs of improvement under Amorim – a point evidenced by positive results against Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
However, United’s squad remains packed with players who are simply not up to the job of representing the club.
That is a sad indictment of the club’s transfer policy in recent years, which has not delivered the desired results.
Many of the players look like they don’t care about representing United, and the collective performances highlight their apathy.
Amorim needs to take an axe to the squad at the end of the season. Whether the club will back him properly is another matter.
