West Ham United are faced with a crucial decision regarding the future of Luis Guilherme just seven months after splashing the cash on the Brazilian winger.
The Hammers paid an initial £19.5 million to sign Guilherme from Palmeiras, with potential add-ons that could increase the total payment to around £25.5m. There was also a 20% sell-on clause.
Despite the initial optimism surrounding his arrival, Guilherme has struggled to make an impact, managing only 43 minutes across five substitute appearances this season.
According to Times Sport, the Hammers now have an opportunity to offload him to the Saudi Pro League, and they must seriously consider cutting their losses.
Splashing the cash on the Brazilian hampered West Ham’s ability to pursue other attacking options. They couldn’t stump up Aston Villa’s £40m asking price for Jhon Duran, who is no longer up for sale.
West Ham need to raise funds to bolster the squad
Guilherme’s paltry record of a goal and an assist in 44 games for Palmeiras should have steered West Ham towards more value-for-money targets.
He had an offer to join an unnamed Saudi Arabian club during the summer. However, West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, travelled to Brazil in June and pushed to sign the youngster.
Steidten took a huge gamble, and it blew up in his face. It is one of several silly decisions that have led to growing criticism of his role at the club.
With Saudi clubs reportedly reigniting their interest in Guilherme, West Ham may have a chance to recoup their investment.
A potential sale would provide much-needed funds as the Hammers look to strengthen their squad this month.
West Ham are in the market for a striker and an energetic midfielder, but they’ll be working with a tight budget without player sales.
Several strikers have been linked with a move to the London Stadium this month, with Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz the latest player on the club’s extensive shortlist.
