Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called for unity and understanding as Kai Havertz faces intense scrutiny ahead of the game against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
“On December 27, we won 1-0 at home, and Kai Havertz scored the winner,” Arteta said. “The whole stadium sang his name. That was 20 days ago. Where is the perspective?”
The Arsenal boss also condemned the social media abuse targeting Havertz, stressing the responsibility of fans, media and the wider football community to address such behaviour.
“This affects him, it affects me, and it affects everyone in the industry,” Arteta added. “We cannot accept it. The best support we can offer is to love the club and support our players.
Arteta praised Arsenal’s internal culture, emphasising the club’s commitment to supporting players through challenging periods.
“Every time there has been an issue, everyone here has rallied around,” he said. “That’s the best medicine.”
While defending Havertz, Arteta also shifted focus to the pressing injury concerns within his squad.
Gabriel Jesus’ condition remains uncertain following a setback against Manchester United.
“It’s not looking good at all,” Arteta said. “We need to review with one more specialist, and we’ll have better information this afternoon.”
Although Jorginho and Jurrien Timber appear to have recovered from cramp, Riccardo Calafiori’s involvement remains uncertain.
Despite these challenges, Arteta remains optimistic about Wednesday’s clash. Calling the derby ‘the nicest game of the season to play’, he urged fans to create an electric atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium.
“It’s in our hands to create the best atmosphere we’ve ever had,” Arteta said. “That’s something we can control, so let’s do it.”
