Manchester United have recalled young goalkeeper Elyh Harrison from his loan term with National League North club Chester FC.
The talented shot-stopper joined Chester on a season-long loan last summer, but United decided to end his time with the lower-division side this week.
Harrison had a successful time with Chester, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play for the club at the National League level. He made 18 league starts, conceding 16 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.
He earned praise from manager Calum Mclntyre who described him as ‘superb’ and was ‘thankful for all his efforts’ during his time at the club.
The Manchester Evening News has revealed the reason behind United’s decision to cut his loan short. He was recalled to spend the rest of the season training with the first team and playing for the academy.
He began this season as the Under-21 first-choice goalkeeper, starting in the first two Premier League 2 games before heading to Chester.
The England youth international will compete with Hubert Graczyk and Dermot Mee as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Development side for the rest of the season.
They return to action on Friday with a league clash with Leeds United U21s at LNER Community Stadium.
His return would be a massive boost for Travis Binnion’s side as they seek to finish the season strongly. They sit sixth in the standings, nine points adrift of joint-league leaders Manchester City and Fulham.
Harrison is one of the highly rated youngsters in the academy. He is the second goalkeeper to win the Reserve Player of the Year award, which he won last season and the youngest recipient since Adnan Januzaj scooped the prize.
He was part of the team that won the U18 Premier League trophy last term, as he was in goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea in the final.
While he has been recalled to train with the first team, he is unlikely to make his professional debut this season. He will play with the U21s for the rest of the campaign.
