Tottenham Hotspur will host Liverpool on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, and the stakes are high for both clubs.
For Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, this is a chance to deliver on his vow to win silverware within two years at any new club.
Postecoglou’s tactics have come under scrutiny, especially after a woeful defensive display in their recent 6-3 defeat to Liverpool in December.
His bold philosophy has left Spurs vulnerable at the back, while an injury crisis has ravaged their squad. Spurs have only kept one clean sheet in their last 11 games, highlighting their defensive frailties.
Speaking ahead of the game, Postecoglou admitted their league form has been ‘nowhere near good enough’.
Tottenham’s defeat to Newcastle United last weekend left them languishing in 12th place, far from their aspirations. The Australian manager sees the cup as a separate challenge,
“We’ve done well to get to the semi-final stage,” he said. “It hasn’t been an easy road, and this is a great test for us.”
Liverpool arrive in London as the holders of the League Cup. They have continued their dominance in domestic competitions under manager Arne Slot and are favourites to progress.
Postecoglou remains undeterred by their firepower, emphasising the importance of taking advantage at home.
“In a two-legged affair, if you can get some kind of advantage in your home game, you’re set up pretty well,” Postecoglou added.
Spurs’ injury list remains daunting, with ten first-team players unavailable. Rodrigo Bentancur is set to return, but James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr are suspended, leaving Postecoglou short of key options in midfield.
New signing Antonin Kinsky could feature in goal, although the manager stopped short of confirming his selection.
Postecoglou also touched on the introduction of referee explanations for VAR decisions during the match, bluntly saying he did not welcome the move.
He questioned whether fans would truly be satisfied with explanations for controversial calls, referencing a disputed handball decision from the Newcastle game.
Despite the challenges, Postecoglou remains focused on the immediate task. The League Cup represents Tottenham’s best shot at ending their 17-year trophy drought.
Whether his bold tactics can overcome Liverpool’s relentless quality will be answered under the floodlights on Wednesday night.
