Manchester United are unlikely to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres this month.
United have been linked with several strikers to resolve their goalscoring woes, including the Sweden international.
They have struggled for goals this season, scoring 23 times in the Premier League, the same as 19th-placed Leicester City.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are the club’s league joint-top scorers with four goals each. Strikers Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have three and two goals, respectively.
They have been more prolific in cup competitions, scoring 15 goals in the League Cup and 12 times in the Europa League.
Despite their goalscoring prowess in cup competitions, the Red Devils need a prolific striker.
Gyokeres has proven to be one, scoring 73 goals across all competitions since the start of last season.
The Swedish striker worked with manager Ruben Amorim at Sporting. They have been tipped to reunite at Old Trafford.
However, according to Sky Germany, a potential reunion is unlikely this month as the 26-year-old wants to finish the season at Sporting.
Gyokeres is leading the charge for Sporting’s second consecutive league title, notching 21 goals in 17 goals to sit atop the top-scorers chart.
He is likelier to consider an exit amid interest from European heavyweights in the summer. Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are monitoring his situation.
His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, has reportedly met with Bayern over a summer move.
United face stiff competition to secure his services. The appeal of working with Amorim again may not be enough to bring him to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils may also struggle to meet the striker’s £82 million valuation. They must reduce their wage bill to afford him.
The club are ready to listen to offers for Marcus Rashford, Antony, Joshua Zirkzee, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof.
