Bruno Fernandes produced a man-of-the-match performance in Manchester United’s 2-2 enthralling draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
He deservedly earned praise for his display, most notably from defender Luke Shaw and ex-teammate David de Gea on social media.
The Portuguese midfielder missed the last game against Newcastle United due to suspension.
He produced a magnificent display against the Premier League table-toppers, registering his sixth assist of the season.
He showed great vision to spot Lisandro Martinez behind the Reds’ defence before the Argentine defender powered an unstoppable shot home for the opening goal.
It was his first assist against Liverpool in 14 games across all competitions and his fourth goal involvement against them.
The United captain also broke a 21-year-old record in the encounter.
He became the first Man United player to create four chances in a Premier League match at Anfield since the 2003/2004 season, according to OptaJoe.
Fernandes has come under immense scrutiny lately, and he responded with a fantastic performance against the league leaders.
He was sublime with and without the ball. He dropped deeper to assist Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, reducing the impact of the Liverpool midfield.
The Portuguese registered three tackles, the joint second-highest in the game – only Mainoo and Ugarte (four each) recorded more.
Fernandes’ inconsistency has been his weakness in recent seasons. Manager Ruben Amorim needs him to reproduce his performance against Liverpool in the future.
The 30-year-old needs to deliver consistently to lift United from their terrible position in the Premier League.
The Red Devils are still languishing in the bottom half of the table. They need Fernandes and others to use the momentum gained against the Reds for the rest of the season.
