Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been criticised for failing to change his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation despite not getting positive results.
The Portuguese tactician has used the same set-up since arriving at Old Trafford, but he is being scrutinised after a poor run of results.
United were beaten 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday to make it back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.
They have lost four of their last five league games and have recorded just two wins under Amorim.
In his post-match commentary after Man United lost to Wolves, pundit Don Hutchinson questioned Amorim for sticking with his 3-4-2-1 formation despite the club’s poor form.
He told ESPN: “I know he has only been there five minutes – I understand that, and I get that he has probably not got the personnel, especially in midfield.”
“The question I will ask Amorim is, why are you persevering with this three-at-the-back system, with your wing-backs, and two in midfield and three up front.”
”I think Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte is a good midfield that does not have to get around the pitch, but they are tidy in possession. So you get that extra number.
“Why would you play a two-man midfield against Premier League teams that get three in there, and you are consistently getting outnumbered? It does not make sense to me.”
Amorim needs to tweak the system to change United’s fortunes
Man United are now 11 points behind the Champions League spot. Amorim needs a drastic change to improve results.
There has been no improvement since he was appointed. The current squad is not suited to playing a 3-4-2-1 formation, and a tactical tweak is needed.
Amorim will need at least two transfer windows to sign the players who are suited to playing his preferred formation, but he must improve the club’s results before that.
United are closer to the relegation zone than they are to the Champions League qualification places. A drastic decision needs to be taken as soon as possible.
