Can Postecoglou deliver sustained success at Spurs?

Ange Postecoglou’s appointment as Tottenham Hotspur manager was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era.

His high-energy football and engaging personality quickly won over fans weary of the pragmatic approaches of his predecessors.

However, after a turbulent run of results, questions are being raised about whether he has reached his limits at the club.

Tottenham started the season brightly, but their fragility has since been exposed. A 4-3 home defeat to Chelsea was a stark reminder of the club’s ongoing defensive vulnerabilities.

Reflecting on their struggles, Postecoglou said, “I don’t sense anybody is feeling sorry for themselves.

“It is a tough moment because there are all these tools you can possibly use as a manager when you are going through tough moments to turn things around.

“Our limited resources from a playing perspective don’t allow us to do that, so you have to find other ways.”

The Australian manager has often been praised for his attacking philosophy, but the cracks in his tactical approach are beginning to show.

Spurs have thrown away leads in several matches this season, and pundits have questioned their mental fortitude.

The pressure on Postecoglou is compounded by Tottenham’s precarious position in the league table. Sitting in 11th place, they are just five points off a potential European qualification spot.

The inconsistent performances have left fans sceptical. Mauricio Pochettino’s prophetic words from 2019 resonate louder than ever.

“You need better furniture to match the house,” he said. “Without investment, progress will be painful.”

However, Postecoglou remains focused on the bigger picture. “I think it is something we need to tackle head-on and keep pushing on,” he said.

“There is still plenty to play for us between now and January just to make sure we keep performing.

“I still sense within this squad there is a real conviction in what we are doing. If we maintain that, we will turn our season around.”

European football could provide some respite. A victory against Rangers in the Europa League could secure Spurs’ place in the last-16 and offer a glimmer of hope.

Postecoglou acknowledged the challenges but was optimistic. “Hopefully, at some point, we hit some smoother waters in terms of some of the things that are happening at the moment,” he added.

“Some of it is self-inflicted, and hopefully, we can get some more consistency.”

For all his charisma and attacking flair, Postecoglou’s tenure at Spurs increasingly mirrors that of his predecessors.

If the same pattern persists, it might not be long before the Australian becomes another casualty of the club’s ruthless managerial carousel.
