Arsenal could sign Newcastle striker after director appointment

The possible arrival of Roberto Olabe as the new Arsenal sporting director would strengthen their interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners have had the Magpies star on their radar for a while, and they remain keen on securing his services ahead of the summer transfer window.

Isak and Olabe could reunite at Arsenal as the Spaniard brought him to Real Sociedad from Borussia Dortmund for £8 million in 2019 before selling him to Newcastle for £63m three years later.

The Gunners want the Sociedad director of football to replace Edu and have held talks with him ahead of his departure from the La Liga club at the end of the season.

Arsenal have Isak near the top of their list of targets for next summer, and Olabe’s arrival would help their cause.

Their resolve to sign the Newcastle star could seriously grow if the Sociedad chief replaces Edu, and the Magpies will have to sell one of their stars if they do not qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season.

Isak reminded everyone of his quality against Liverpool on Wednesday night, with his opening strike against the Reds arrowing home.

He could be the missing piece of the puzzle Arsenal need to become strong Premier League and Champions League challengers, and landing Olabe would help boost their chances.

Newcastle will demand top dollar for the 25-year-old as he has more than three years left on his current contract.

Arsenal could be ready to meet their demands and break the bank if manager Mikel Arteta is convinced the striker can help take his team to the next level.
