Despite Chelsea sitting third in the Premier League table, manager Enzo Maresca is adamant that his side is not ready to challenge for the title this season.
Maresca’s declaration comes after a dominant 3-0 win over Aston Villa, which saw Chelsea leapfrog Manchester City.
However, the Blues remain nine points behind Liverpool, who are setting the pace at the top. For Maresca, the focus is not on immediate success but on building a dynasty.
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over, Chelsea have spent more than £1.5 billion on a squad packed with young talent.
Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer are blossoming, while Nicolas Jackson has started to make his mark.
The average age of the squad is just 23, a deliberate strategy to lay the groundwork for sustained dominance. Maresca believes this youthfulness is both Chelsea’s greatest strength and their Achilles’ heel.
While the potential is undeniable, the lack of experience will prevent them from competing at the highest level this season.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Southampton, Maresca outlined his vision for the club’s future.
“We’re not in the title race,” he insists, pointing to the maturity of Liverpool and Arsenal, who have been consistent challengers in recent years.
“There’s no specific target this season. The focus is on building something important for the future.
“I know people struggle to believe this, but I’m not concerned about where we finish this year. The priority is Southampton, then the next game, and so on.”
Chelsea’s recent progress under Maresca reflects a shift from the turbulence of the previous two seasons, which yielded mid-table finishes and no trophies.
While injuries to key players such as Wesley Fofana and Reece James pose challenges, the signs of stabilisation are evident.
Chelsea fans may need to temper their expectations. But if Maresca’s vision holds true, the Blues could soon usher in a new era of dominance fuelled by youth, talent and a clear long-term strategy.
