Luke Shaw’s career at Manchester United has revealed that he is sidelined again, just weeks after returning from a lengthy injury absence.
Shaw missed significant game time due to a persistent calf injury last season.
He featured for England during the latter stages of the 2024 European Championship, but his return to club football was short-lived, with the calf issue recurring during pre-season.
Shaw faces a new and unrelated injury, ruling him out for several weeks. His anguish was evident in a heartfelt statement posted on social media.
“It’s hurting a lot having to write this,” he confessed. “I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately, I’ve had a small setback.
“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs, but this has definitely been my toughest period. I’m absolutely devastated, and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.
“I understand there will be people frustrated, angry, disappointed, and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time
“But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.
“Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed, and I really do appreciate it.”
Since his return earlier this season, Shaw has made three substitute appearances against Ipswich Town, Bodo/Glimt and Everton.
His performances under new manager Ruben Amorim hinted at a resurgence, but the optimism has been cut short.
Shaw was notably absent from the travelling squad for Man United’s midweek clash against Arsenal, sparking speculation about his fitness before his statement confirmed the worst.
His absence leaves United with a gap to fill on the left flank, raising questions about the squad’s depth and the club’s reliance on the defender.
While Shaw’s resilience has seen him overcome challenges before, this latest blow underscores the fragility of a career that has shown immense promise but has been frequently derailed.
His determination to return stronger is admirable, but United’s patience may eventually wear thin if injuries continue to overshadow his contributions on the pitch.
