Darren Fletcher’s touchline ban and fine have been reduced following an appeal, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed.
The Manchester United first-team coach will now serve a two-match ban and pay a £6,000 fine, reduced from the initial three-match suspension and £7,500 penalty.
The incident occurred during United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford, where tensions flared after Matthijs de Ligt was briefly off the pitch receiving treatment.
Fletcher, initially observing the match from the press box alongside analysts, made his way to the tunnel before half-time to confront officials.
The FA alleged that Fletcher acted in an improper or confrontational manner and used abusive or insulting language towards several match officials.
Fletcher admitted to the misconduct but insisted his comments were directed only at the fourth official and referee.
he FA’s Regulatory Commission found the charges proven in their initial ruling, issuing a three-match touchline ban and a £7,500 fine.
However, referee Samuel Barrott denied that Fletcher had been abusive, leading to an independent appeal board reviewing the decision.
Following the appeal, the board reduced the sanctions, deeming a two-match ban and £6,000 fine more appropriate.
The FA confirmed that the appeal board’s written reasons for the adjustment would be released in due course.
Fletcher avoided dismissal during Man United’s recent coaching overhaul, which saw Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy depart following a series of poor results.
New manager Ruben Amorim brought in several fresh faces to his backroom staff but retained Fletcher, who remains a prominent figure behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Despite Fletcher’s long-standing association with the club, where he made 342 appearances, some fans have criticised his continued presence while Van Nistelrooy was let go.
However, Fletcher has been a key part of the transition process and continues to serve in a pivotal role under Amorim’s leadership.
The reduced sanctions bring some relief to Fletcher as he looks to move forward and refocus on his duties during a crucial period for the club.
