Rangers defender John Souttar is gradually becoming a cult hero at Ibrox, and he continues to impress for Scotland.
The Gers defender started for Scotland against Croatia at Hampden Park on Friday night and produced a solid performance, helping his side win 1-0 in the Nations League.
The 28-year-old centre-back has been the pillar of strength at the back for Rangers this season.
He has started in ten Scottish Premiership games and has been one of the most consistent performers, even though his teammates haven’t quite reached the same dizzy heights.
He has been so influential this season that Barry Ferguson suggested that he should take the armband from James Tavernier if Philippe Clement decides to part ways with the veteran full-back.
Souttar struggled badly with injuries when he first joined from Heart of Midlothian, but he has gradually grown into a key player this season.
What the Scottish media said about the Rangers defender
The Daily Record noted that the 28-year-old delivered yet another ‘big performance’ for his country.
He closed down the space really well and made some vital blocks. The newspaper gave him an 8/10 rating for his performance.
They wrote: “Another big performance, defended box brilliantly, closed down space, made vital blocks and good use of ball. Too quick for Petar Sucic at red.”
The Scottish Daily Mail was impressed with his ability to read the game. He was strong and sharp and ensured the defence kept a clean sheet. They also gave him an 8/10 rating.
They wrote: “Strong, sharp, and read the game well. More than anyone, he prevented Croatia turning early dominance into goals.”
Stats: How Souttar fared vs Croatia
Souttar was outstanding at the back. He made one tackle, one interception, three clearances and two vital blocks.
He won seven out of seven duels and managed 87 percent passing accuracy.
Clement will now expect Souttar to continue his impressive form for Rangers after the international break.
