‘What a player’ – Steven Gerrard blown away by Liverpool star last night

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones made his England debut in the Nations League game against Greece last night, capping his fine performance with a goal as the Three Lions ran out 3-0 winners.

The Reds star scored the third goal of the match with a backheel flick into the far corner, helping England go top of their group as a result.

Steven Gerrard was blown away by Jones’ performance on Thursday night, taking to social media platform Instagram to praise the 23-year-old.

The Liverpool midfielder received his first senior call-up as part of the 33-player preliminary squad for the 2024 European Championship but was later cut from the final 26-man squad.

He was also part of the squad last month but did not feature in the 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley and could not travel with the squad to Finland for personal reasons.

Jones has been solid at club level under new Reds manager Arne Slot this term. England interim manager Lee Carsley made no mistake selecting him.

Incoming boss Thomas Tuchel would have been keeping an eye on proceedings last night, and the Liverpool star has boosted his chances of being part of subsequent squads.

International football does not resume until March 2025 after the game against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, and Jones has to keep impressing going forward to be part of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

He has been very reliable for Liverpool and will now be eager to prove himself in the national team colours after he was snubbed for Euro 2024.
