Konate surpasses Van Dijk as Premier League’s top defender

William Gallas has declared Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate the Premier League’s top centre-back, surpassing teammate Virgil van Dijk.

The former Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender praised Konate’s dominance this season, describing him as a player who has elevated his game to new heights.

The 25-year-old French international is in his fourth season with Liverpool after joining from RB Leipzig for £36 million and has become a key part of their defence.

Konate’s contributions have been vital to Liverpool’s early-season success. They have conceded only six goals in their first 11 Premier League matches, building a five-point lead at the top of the table.

Gallas, who made over 300 Premier League appearances and won two league titles, said: “Right now, the best defender in the Premier League is Ibrahima Konate.

“On current form, there’s no one better. He has improved so much since last season and is incredibly solid. Watching him play, it’s clear opponents don’t even want to challenge him. That kind of aura and presence is what makes him special.”

Highlighting Liverpool’s defensive success, Gallas attributed it to Konate’s commanding performances, explaining that ‘most strikers and wingers already know they’ll struggle against him’.

Reflecting on Liverpool’s recent match against Arsenal, Gallas noted: “When Liverpool played at the Emirates, Gabriel Martinelli didn’t even want to challenge him. He knew he would lose that duel.”

The former Arsenal defender believes Konate is well on his way to being recognised as one of the best defenders in the league. “If Konate continues like this, he will undoubtedly earn a spot in the Premier League Team of the Year,” he said.

The endorsement from Gallas, a decorated defender himself, highlights the rapid rise of Konate.

As Liverpool push for the Premier League title, the Frenchman’s form could be decisive in maintaining their defensive dominance and setting the benchmark for centre-backs across the league.
