Manchester United have enquired about signing Sporting CP wonderkid Geovany Quenda, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
The Red Devils have been monitoring some of Europe’s best emerging talents, and they recently had representatives watching Quenda in action against Famalicao.
The 17-year-old was picked in the starting line-up by manager Ruben Amorim, and he made the most of the opportunity. The right winger scored the second goal of the encounter.
United have reportedly been monitoring him for some time. They have ‘already’ started considering the possibility of landing his signature from Sporting.
The Red Devils have a genuine interest and are ‘leading the pursuit’ of the left-footed ace. A deal won’t be easy to secure as his buy-out clause was increased last month.
The teenager’s clause was raised from £37.5 million to £83m with a new contract until June 2027.
United’s pursuit of Quenda could depend on outward activity
The club are currently well stocked in the wide attacking positions. Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were the regular starters under former manager Erik ten Hag.
Amad Diallo has also impressed when offered the opportunity. Antony has been the most frustrating of the quartet, but he still has the chance to redeem himself this season.
The club may not contemplate a new arrival on the right wing unless there is a departure.
The hierarchy are already planning the potential loan transfer of Antony in January. They have their sights on offloading him permanently next summer.
Diallo could also head for the exit door if he does not renew his contract. His current deal ends on June 30.
United could make a serious effort to land Quenda if Antony or Diallo leave the club.
Quenda has already been called up by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez on one occasion.
The left-footed youngster is a fantastic dribbler with a success rate of 75 percent this term. He has also won 75% of his ground duels with an average of almost two key passes per outing.
He has made only three goal contributions in his breakthrough season, but United seem convinced that he has the credentials to become the next big thing in Portuguese football.
The price could be a stumbling block towards a summer deal when he turns 18. Having increased his clause to £83m, Sporting may hold out for at least £55m.
