Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new head coach of the England men’s national team, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed.
The German international will take over from January 1, 2025, meaning interim coach Lee Carsley will continue to lead the team for England’s Nations League fixtures in November.
Tuchel will be reunited with his trusted associate Anthony Barry, who worked with him during spells at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Further changes to the backroom staff are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
According to the FA, Tuchel signed his contract on October 8 after a number of candidates were interviewed as part of the process.
The FA hasn’t disclosed the exact length of Tuchel’s contract, but it includes a performance bonus for winning the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was regarded as the FA’s dream replacement for Gareth Southgate, but uncertainty surrounding his long-term future complicated a potential move.
The Premier League champions are plotting to convince him to extend his contract by one more year, so the FA have moved swiftly to appoint Tuchel, and it could be a massive coup for England.
“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team,” Tuchel said. “I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Bayern at the end of last season, but he is already familiar with most of England’s players from his time in the Premier League.
He was linked with a move to Manchester United but they decided to stick with Erik ten Hag despite their awful start to the season.
