Erik ten Hag’s tough call as in-form Man Utd star faces surprise bench role against Tottenham

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag faces a big selection dilemma ahead of Tottenham Hotspur clash at Old Trafford.

Christian Eriksen has started in the previous four games for United. He has been highly productive, bagging three goals and one assist.

His recent strike came in the 1-1 draw with FC Twente. He put United ahead with a stunning shot into the top corner.

However, his night turned sour when he cheaply gave the ball away inside his own half in the build-up to the visitors’ equaliser.

It has been a surprise to see Eriksen starting four consecutive games, considering he was heavily linked with an exit this summer.

The Denmark international has fared well and helped United progress the ball forward.

He is an attacking midfielder by trade, and his instinct to pass forward benefits the team.

When United are in possession, Diogo Dalot takes central positions to support midfield and choke the opposition.

His movement allows Eriksen to move forward and not just feature as a traditional number eight.

However, United may play into the hands of Tottenham if Ten Hag starts Eriksen on Sunday.

Spurs are a dynamic side, and their tenacious midfielders are full of energy.

The Red Devils may not dominate the ball possession against Spurs like they did against Crystal Palace and Barnsley.

Eriksen must prioritise his defensive duties and maintain positional awareness to prevent the visitors from capitalising during transitions.

The 32-year-old does not have the legs to cover every blade of the grass. Spurs may target him to bypass midfield and pile pressure on United’s defence.

A midfield pivot of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte could be an ideal set-up for United.

Mainoo would provide flair, while Ugarte would offer essential defensive stability.
