Star who left Man Utd this summer could now terminate contract and retire

Former Manchester United star Raphael Varane could terminate his contract with Como and retire from professional football, according to French outlet Le Parisien.

The former France international left the Red Devils as a free agent and joined the Serie A club this summer, but he played just once before picking up a knee injury.

Varane has been ruled out for months as a result, and he is now considering hanging up his boots, with an announcement expected any moment from now.

Injuries also limited the former Real Madrid star to live up to the expectations at Man United, and calling time on his career looks like the most reasonable thing to do.

The 31-year-old won it all with both club and country, leaving United with Carabao Cup and FA Cup winners medals after three campaigns. He previously won four Champions League and three La Liga titles with the Spanish club.

Varane won the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018 and also reached the final in 2022, and he will go down in history as one of the finest centre-backs of all time.

He played 95 games for Man United, producing some incredible performances before the intensity of the English top-flight started telling on him.

Varane was one of the highest-paid players at United before leaving, pocketing £340,000-a-week, and the club opted against handing him a new deal following his frequent struggles with his fitness.

It has now culminated in his expected decision to retire, and he could move into coaching or punditry afterwards.
