Redknapp backs Postecoglou to win a trophy with Tottenham this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has backed Ange Postecoglou to win a trophy with the club this season.

Tottenham booked a spot in the fourth round of the League Cup after defeating Coventry City 2-1, but they were made to work hard for the victory.

Postecoglou made several changes for the game, but his heavily rotated line-up struggled to create anything worthwhile and were nearly punished for their toothlessness in the final third.

Tottenham went behind in the 63rd minute, but late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson helped them void another embarrassing early League Cup exit.

Postecoglou has been quoted saying that he generally wins silverware in his second season, and Redknapp has backed the Australian to end Tottenham’s trophy drought.

Redknapp told Sky Sports News: “It’s what he said he normally wins things in his second year, so he has put himself under a bit of pressure. I like Ange, and hopefully, he can deliver.

“He has every chance. I don’t see why they [Tottenham] shouldn’t win a cup this year. Not that they’ll win the league, but they could win the Carabao Cup.

“They’ve got a good squad, good players, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t get a trophy this year.”

Tottenham return to Premier League action this weekend, taking on Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Having suffered consecutive league defeats against Newcastle United and Arsenal, Postecoglou will be determined for his side to get back to winning ways.

Spurs have endured an awful start to the season, picking up just four points from four games and are already five points away from the Champions League positions.

They have scored just three goals in their last three games across all competitions and will need to find their goalscoring boots to overcome Brentford.
