The Football Association (FA) has appointed Lee Carsley as England’s interim manager following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
Carsley will lead the Three Lions in their upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
The 50-year-old steps up from his position in charge of the England Under-21s.
Carsley could remain in charge for the rest of the year as the FA’s recruitment process for a permanent Southgate successor gathers pace.
Carsley said (via England Football): “It is an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis.
“As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.
“My main priority is to ensure continuity, and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
Carsley won 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland during his playing days. He enjoyed a 17-year career, tallying 33 goals in 478 appearances for several clubs.
He subsequently transitioned into coaching, starting as caretaker manager for Coventry City. His managerial experience includes stints with Brentford and Birmingham City.
He has spent the last four years within the FA’s youth development structure, guiding the U20s and U21s.
Carsley guided the Young Lions to the Under-21 European Championship title in 2023.
While Carsley’s long-term aspirations remain unclear, the appointment presents an audition opportunity for both him and the FA.
He could follow Southgate’s path to the permanent job. The 54-year-old was promoted from the U21s in 2016 for a four-game interim spell before landing a permanent four-year contract as England manager.
The FA’s search for Southgate’s successor continues, with Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Kieran McKenna remaining on the shortlist.
Nationality isn’t a prerequisite, but FA Chief Executive Officer Mark Bullingham is reportedly leaning towards a home-grown option.
