Manchester United suffered multiple injury setbacks during the 2023/24 season and the trend has continued ahead of the new campaign.
Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund picked up injuries during the first half of the friendly against Arsenal and are expected to miss several games.
Yoro will be sidelined for at least three months after ankle surgery while Hojlund could be out for five to six weeks after suffering a hamstring issue.
The former posted an update on his social media accounts after his operation yesterday. “This is not the start I wanted, but that’s football,” he wrote.
“The operation went well. Thank you for your many messages of support. Now, time for patience and rehabilitation work. See you soon, stronger.”
Yoro’s ankle injury is a huge blow for United
United parted ways with Raphael Varane on a free transfer last month. Yoro was a statement signing to replace him. He was convinced to join despite his initial preference to sign for Real Madrid.
The £43 million-rated star immediately showed his quality on the ball. He was also impressive with his concentration and positioning but is now sidelined until early November after an unfortunate injury.
The setback is a huge blow for United who had a disappointing defensive record last term.
Injuries have been a recurring concern. Harry Maguire did not face Liverpool as a precaution while Victor Lindelof was substituted during the game after picking up a minor knock.
United face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday where Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans could be the frontline centre-backs.
The Northern Irishman exceeded expectations last term, but he is no longer in his prime. United need to find a quick solution in the transfer market before the new top-flight campaign.
Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt is obviously the preferred target, but he won’t come on the cheap. United may have to pay around £43m up front to sign the Netherlands ace.
