Manchester United’s defensive depth is a growing concern as injuries have started to disrupt their plans for the new season.
Summer signing Leny Yoro is sidelined for three months due to a broken metatarsal.
Young prospect Will Fish also picked up an injury against Liverpool during the pre-season tour.
Erik ten Hag currently has four options for the two centre-back berths – Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.
Martinez holds the key to Ten Hag’s defence. The 26-year-old is expected to return to training tomorrow.
He is United’s best defender but has struggled with multiple injuries. The Argentine international suffered a foot injury last September that kept him out for over 100 days.
A knee injury and calf strain further derailed his 2023/24 campaign. The setbacks were so significant that he missed 42 games throughout the season.
The United supporters hope that Martinez will remain fit and available for selection. However, another setback will put United on the back foot.
The Red Devils cannot afford another long-term injury to Martinez.
While Maguire showed resilience and determination last term, he also has suffered fitness issues.
Lindelof has shown flashes of quality but his performances have often been erratic. Evans is an emergency alternative at the back but is not a preferred starter.
Given the precarious situation, United must urgently strengthen their defensive ranks.
The club have expressed interest in signing Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. Ten Hag needs quality options at the back, and De Ligt’s arrival would be a welcome addition.
The £55 million-rated star is a promising central defender. His commanding physical presence makes him a versatile asset in both defensive and offensive phases.
