Manchester United have confirmed the signing of highly coveted Lille centre-back Leny Yoro.
The 18-year-old prodigy has signed a five-year contract with the Red Devils, with an option for an additional 12 months.
United shrugged off competition from Champions League holders Real Madrid to sign the talented defender in what could be a coup for the club.
Erik ten Hag was keen to replace Raphael Varane, who left the club as a free agent earlier this summer, and Yoro was identified as a top priority.
United negotiated a £42 million plus £10m in add-ons transfer package with Lille but were forced to wait for the player to decide on his future.
Yoro wanted a move to Madrid, but they were unwilling to match United’s offer. The Premier League club convinced the youngster that joining them was in his best interests.
The teenager, who has been described as ‘very ambitious‘ by manager Paulo Fonseca, has now completed his medical examinations and will join Ten Hag’s squad for pre-season.
Yoro becomes United’s second signing of the summer transfer window after Netherlands international Joshua Zirkzee, who joined the club from Bologna in a deal worth around £36m.
United could bring in a second centre-back this summer, although the move may be postponed until later in the transfer window.
The club are still interested in Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and have already agreed personal terms with him.
While they prioritised a move for Yoro over the experienced Dutchman, they could renew their interest before the transfer window closes on September 1.
United will now turn their attention to strengthening their midfield options.
Casemiro is still expected to leave the club amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, and United have been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
However, after adding Zirkzee and Yoro to the squad, they may have to offload Casemiro before making a move for Ugarte, although a loan deal is still possible.
