Gareth Southgate steps down as England manager after Euro 2024 final loss

Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England manager after the 2024 European Championship final defeat.

The Three Lions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in Berlin on Sunday.

Southgate’s contract was set to expire later this year, but the Football Association reportedly hoped he would extend it.

However, he has resigned as England manager after eight years. Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel are among the top candidates to succeed the 53-year-old.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Southgate took over as the Three Lions boss in November 2016 and led them to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup, where they lost 2-1 to Croatia.

He had a golden opportunity to win major silverware with the national side when they reached the final of Euro 2020, but they lost on penalties to Italy in the final at Wembley Stadium.

England’s 2022 World Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals as France knocked them out of the tournament by beating them 2-1.

Southgate came very close to winning the 2024 European Championship, but his team once again came up short as Spain outclassed them.
