Man Utd could sign Ivan Toney after Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United have not ruled out the possibility of signing more than one striker during the summer transfer window, according to The Telegraph.

The Red Devils are close to landing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and are expected to make a transfer announcement in the coming hours.

United have spent around £35 million on the Dutchman, but they have repeatedly not ruled out signing another centre-forward this summer.

The Red Devils are monitoring Brentford star Ivan Toney’s situation, who has entered the final year of his contract with the London club.

United can make a big statement with double striker swoop

Zirkzee is one of the best upcoming young strikers in European football. The 23-year-old made 19 goal contributions from 37 appearances for Bologna last term.

He created 11 big chances in the Italian top flight -the joint fourth highest. With better creative players at United, his statistics will improve.

Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund could emerge as prolific goalscorers in the long run, but the club may invest in another experienced marksman.

Toney had a difficult 2023/24 campaign after his eight-month ban, scoring four goals in 17 games. He struggled due to the lack of pre-season training.

He netted 21 goals for the Bees in 2022/23. The 28-year-old has proven himself at the top level and would be another top acquisition for the Red Devils.

Brentford value the England international at £60m, but they could accept closer to £40m.

If United were to sign him, manager Erik ten Hag may have to consider using the double-six formation (4-2-2-2) to play two strikers.
