Liverpool intensify Koopmeiners pursuit after shock Thiago retirement

Liverpool are set to intensify their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, according to Italian outlet TuttoJuve.

The Merseysiders have ramped up their interest in Koopmeiners following the shock retirement of Thiago Alcantara.

He decided to hang up his boots after a long battle with hip and knee issues. The 33-year-old Spaniard made only one appearance last season.

Liverpool will be in the market for replacements, and the Atalanta star is a top candidate. However, they face stiff competition from Serie A giants Juventus.

Atalanta are reportedly hesitant to sell their prized asset to a direct Serie A rival, potentially opening the door for Liverpool.

Koopmeiners has shone since joining Atalanta in 2021, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the Italian top flight.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a stellar season last year, contributing 15 goals and seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.

His performances have attracted interest from several European clubs circling, but Liverpool and Juventus appear to be the front-runners.

Despite Atalanta’s reservations about selling to Juventus, the Bianconeri remain the favourites to sign him.

Liverpool haven’t officially tabled an offer yet, but a hefty fee of around £51 million will be enough to bring him to Anfield.

Manager Arne Slot managed Koopmeiners at AZ Alkmaar. Their working relationship could be a factor in attracting the Dutchman.

However, Atalanta will only part ways with Koopmeiners for a significant sum. They are in a strong negotiating position as he has one year left on his deal.

The reigning Europa League champions are determined to hold onto their star player, but Liverpool’s interest could force their hand.
