Man United consider move for Bayern Munich defender

Manchester United are considering a move for Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, according to The Athletic.

The 24-year-old has emerged as a serious target for the Red Devils as they look to bolster their defence.

Man United have released Raphael Varane and need to strengthen their rearguard. They have set their sights on De Ligt, who has long been tipped to become one of the best defenders in the world.

The Dutch centre-half boasts a wealth of experience, having played for Ajax, Juventus and Bayern.

De Ligt helped Bayern keep two clean sheets in 22 Bundesliga appearances last term, but injuries derailed his season.

Official talks haven’t begun, but De Ligt is understood to be a concrete option. United’s interest in the defender stretches back to his Ajax days.

De Ligt’s contract with Bayern runs until 2027, but his price tag is likely to be manageable compared to other targets.

United’s previous offer of £35m plus add-ons for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite was rejected, with the Toffees holding out for closer to £70m.

United are also exploring other options. Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice is unavailable, and Lille’s Leny Yoro appears destined to join Real Madrid.

The pursuit of De Ligt is independent of the Branthwaite situation, with United potentially looking to sign two new central defenders.

Branthwaite and De Ligt could form a terrific backline that will serve Man United for years, but securing both deals will not be easy.

The success of United’s defensive rebuild will hinge on player departures. Sales are needed to generate funds to facilitate new arrivals.
