Man Utd bidding to sign former Perth Glory starlet this summer

Newton Abbot Spurs defender James Overy may be Manchester United’s first signing of the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been looking to bolster the squad with younger players, and the former Perth Glory player is on the club’s radar.

The 16-year-old left the A-League club last year following his family’s relocation from Australia to England and has been playing non-league football in Devon.

Man United are now hoping he will accept a scholarship deal as he is not yet 17 years old, and it appears they have pipped West Ham United and Everton to his services.

Overy first caught the attention of United and other Premier League clubs after impressing in a pre-season friendly for Perth Glory against West Ham United when he was just 15 last summer.

The Hammers ran out 6-2 winners, but the teenage sensation left a lasting impression and could sign for Man United if all goes to plan.

Full-back is a position the Red Devils are desperate to strengthen after losing Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw to long-term injuries this season.

Overy is primarily a right-back and is reportedly eligible to play for Scotland, Australia and England.

The full-back is unlikely to break into the Man United first-team immediately despite his experience of senior football with Perth Glory.

However, a scholarship deal could represent a significant step towards potentially being offered a professional contract and establishing himself as a Red Devils star in a few years.
