Chelsea announce Enzo Maresca as their new manager

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Enzo Maresca as their new manager on a five-year deal.

The Italian boss was appointed Leicester City manager in June 2023 and led them to an immediate return to the Premier League by winning the Championship title.

Maresca doesn’t have much management experience but he offers an attractive brand of football based on possession and dominance.

He has been handed a long-term contract by Chelsea, but it is uncertain how much time he will be given if results don’t go their way.

The Blues mutually parted company with Mauricio Pochettino after just one season due to their differences over the playing philosophy.

The Premier League giants were linked with several managers, including Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and former Brighton & Hove Albion chief Roberto De Zerbi.

But they ultimately appointed Maresca by paying around £10 million in compensation to Leicester.

Chelsea were impressed with his prior knowledge of their squad and his focus on the way the club wants to play.
