Pochettino’s Chelsea exit paves way for Tottenham to sign £50m-rated homegrown star

Mauricio Pochettino’s exit from Chelsea bodes well for Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans.

Spurs are long-term admirers of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and are hoping to lure him across the capital this summer.

Gallager was a mainstay in Pochettino’s squad last season, contributing seven goals and nine assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

Pochettino is a huge fan of the England international, who was an ever-present figure on his team sheet and a key component of his brand of football.

Pochettino used Gallagher in several roles in the middle of the park and occasionally shifted him to the left-wing when Chelsea were hit with injury problems.

The 24-year-old also captained the Blues for much of the campaign with Reece James on the sidelines, emphasising Pochettino’s trust in his ability to lead the group.

The Argentine manager’s departure now paves the way for Spurs to act on their interest, with Chelsea still open to selling Gallagher this summer.

Tottenham are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, with Ange Postecoglou keen to prune his bloated squad.

Despite a season marked by challenges, Postecoglou’s debut season at Tottenham can be considered successful after securing a Europa League spot with a fifth-place finish.

However, ambitions at Spurs are far loftier. They are aiming to challenge for silverware next term and are keen to add fresh faces across all positions.

Gallagher is at the top of their wishlist, but Chelsea have slapped a £50 million asking price on him.

Spurs are hoping to negotiate a lower fee for the Englishman as he approaches the final 12 months of his contract.

Negotiating with a rival club can be tricky, but Gallagher would be an exceptional signing.

His energy, fitness levels and creativity would be assets for Postecoglou’s side as they aim to compete for major honours.
