Uncontested Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have etched their names in history with a 2-1 home win against Augsburg on the final day.
Xabi Alonso’s ‘Invincibles’ are the first team in Bundesliga history to win the trophy without losing a single game.
They have not only ended Bayern Munich’s decade-long reign in Germany’s top flight but also did so in unprecedented fashion.
Goals by Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich sealed the deal for Leverkusen against mid-table Augsburg, inspiring them to a mind-blowing 28th win in 34 league matches.
Only Bayern in 2012/13 and 2013/14 outperformed Leverkusen’s tally of 28 league triumphs, racking up 29 wins apiece, which testifies to Die Werkself’s unparalleled dominance this term.
Nicknamed ‘Neverkusen’ for never lifting the Bundesliga title throughout the club’s 119-year history, Alonso’s side headed into the campaign as realistic top-four contenders.
But not in their wildest dreams could they’ve imagined to dethrone record-time champions Bayern by leaving them a staggering 18 points in their wake.
They’ve hoisted a long-awaited maiden Bundesliga title in style, becoming only the second club in the competition’s history to hit a 90-point landmark after Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern in 2012/13.
In doing so, Leverkusen earned a new tag. They’re now aptly named ‘Neverlusen.’
Today’s victory marked their 51st consecutive game in all competitions without defeat.
Leverkusen’s formidable streak could improve by the end of the season, with two showpiece events waiting around the corner.
While Atalanta could provide the Germans with a stern test in the upcoming Europa League final, the DFB-Pokal title decider against second-tier Kaiserslautern should be another day at the office for the BayArena outfit.
No team in the history of Europe’s top-tier football has won a treble without losing a single match, but no one would dare to put it past this Leverkusen side to achieve that piece of greatness by the end of May.
