Ligue 1 manager opens the door to sign world-class Man Utd star

Lens manager Franck Haise has opened the door for Raphael Varane to return to the French outfit on a free transfer.

Varane announced earlier this week that he will be leaving Manchester United when his contract expires on June 30.

The Frenchman has yet to decide about his next club, but he has previously hinted that he could return to Lens.

Haise has now welcomed the prospect of Varane’s homecoming but added that the financial aspects don’t depend on him.

He said (via RMC Sport): “Obviously Raphael Varane can interest me.”

“By his qualities as a player, by his qualities as a leader, by his human qualities, by everything he represents and by everything he is still capable of giving, I am sure.

“After that the financial aspects don’t just depend on me, but if there was a possibility I would be the happiest coach.”

Varane needs to accept a huge pay cut for Lens reunion

The Frenchman is one of the highest earners at United on £340,000-a-week.

This is one of the primary reasons why the club decided against a renewal. The club had an extension clause to keep him for another year, but they opted against triggering it.

Varane will now pursue a new challenge elsewhere. He could secure a big payday with a move to the Saudi Pro League, but the centre-back could continue in Europe.

Lens should be one of the front-runners to sign him. Varane was with the Ligue 1 outfit between the age of nine and 18 before joining Real Madrid.

However, a free transfer could depend on him accepting a significant pay cut. Brice Samba and Elye Wahi are their highest earners on just £50,000 per week.

Lens could make Varane their most-paid player, but they are unlikely to exceed the £100,000 per week mark. A homecoming could be on the cards if Varane accepts those terms.
