Man Utd legend delivers damning squad verdict to Erik ten Hag

Wayne Rooney has delivered a brutal verdict on Manchester United’s current squad, saying most of them should be moved on.

Erik ten Hag’s side sealed a 3-2 success against Newcastle United on Wednesday, but it has been a hugely disappointing season for the Premier League giants.

A big summer rebuild is expected as United aim to make a comeback next term.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Rooney surprised presenter David Jones with his damning assessment of Ten Hag’s squad.

He said: “You have to build the team around Bruno (Fernandes). He’s quality and has got fight in him, and then I think all the other players get rid of them.”

When asked about his comment by Jones, Rooney clarified: “I think you keep the young players, and you keep Bruno.

“I think it has to be a massive clearout. It has to be. It’s not going to be in one year, but I think it’s going to be in the next couple of years.”

It was far from a vintage performance by United, but there were some positives to take.

They secured all three points and are still in contention for a seventh-place finish.

Casemiro was much better at centre-back, registering five clearances, three tackles and three long balls.

Sofyan Amrabat delivered another solid display, making a terrific recovery to deny a clear goal for Alexander Isak.

Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes were also excellent in attack.

United will hopefully carry this form into the FA Cup final against Manchester City later this month.

A Victory will secure United a place in next season’s Europa League.
