Michael Edwards wants ‘outstanding’ player for Liverpool as ‘shortlist’ update emerges

Liverpool are one of the clubs showing keen interest in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds are looking to sign a new back-up goalkeeper. They have earmarked McCarthy, who has been ‘outstanding’ for the Saints in the Championship.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and looks set to move elsewhere.

Michael Edwards is known for making smart signings, and his backroom team could be closely following his situation. Newcastle United and Celtic are also interested in signing him.

The Reds are monitoring developments with McCarthy as they ‘draw up shortlists’ for back-up keepers.

Liverpool will need a new back-up goalkeeper

The Reds will usher in a new direction under Arne Slot next season with Jurgen Klopp set to depart at the end of the campaign.

While it’s too early to predict summer transfer plans, it won’t be wrong to assume that Liverpool will need to sign a new centre-back and a back-up goalkeeper.

Adrian has been the club’s third-choice keeper, and he is likely to leave at the end of the season.

Caoimhin Kelleher has done a terrific job for the Reds this season in Alisson’s absence. However, there is a high chance that he could move elsewhere to play regular games.

McCarthy is a vastly experienced former England international who has forced his way into the first-team squad after Gavin Bazunu ruptured his Achilles tendon last month.

The veteran goalkeeper has previously played for Reading, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Southampton in the Premier League and is eyeing a return to the top flight.

He would probably jump at the opportunity to play for the Reds towards the end of his career.

Liverpool are also showing keen interest in signing a Newcastle player this summer.
