Arsenal ‘very interested’ in signing Xavi Simons from PSG

Arsenal are one of several clubs ‘very interested’ in signing Paris Saint-Germain winger Xavi Simons this summer, according to Spanish publication Sport.

The Dutchman rejoined Les Parisiens from PSV Eindhoven last summer after they triggered a buy-back clause worth €6 million. He was subsequently loaned out to RB Leipzig.

Simons has had a fine season with the Bundesliga outfit, registering nine goals and 15 assists.

Leipzig have made a formal offer to re-sign Simons, but the proposal is reportedly ‘not enough’.

Sport (page 16) claim PSG have already put the player on the transfer market. Arsenal and Bayern Munich are keen on signing him.

The 21-year-old wants to return to his boyhood club Barcelona, but they are in no position to afford a huge financial package.

PSG want more than € 60 million (£52m) to part ways with the Netherlands international, and his future could be sorted out by May 31.

Simons could be signed as Bukayo Saka’s competitor

Bukayo Saka has been Arsenal’s best contributor of goals in recent years, but there have been phases when he has struggled with his form and fitness.

While the club have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left wing, they have not had the same luxury on the opposite flank with no competition for Saka.

The club graduate has often played through 90 minutes. Reiss Nelson has barely made an impression in his cameo appearances.

Simons would be an ideal signing to add competition for places. The Dutchman has registered 10 goal contributions from only 18 outings from the right wing this term.

The youngster can also play on the left wing, as an attacking midfielder or up front. His versatile quality would fit into the Gunners’s transfer profile.
