Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Athletic Club star Nico Williams, who has turned the heads of several clubs across Europe.
According to AS, Spurs have emerged as a tempting proposition for the highly sought-after youngster alongside other Premier League clubs, and they must move swiftly to secure his signature.
The 21-year-old has been a revelation for Ernesto Valverde’s side this season, playing a massive role as the club ended their four-decade wait for a major title after lifting the Copa del Rey.
Williams has been unplayable in the Basque club’s line-up, contributing six goals and 14 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions.
His ability to feature anywhere across the front line is also a major appeal for clubs looking to reinforce their attack, and he will be in high demand when the summer transfer window opens.
Williams would be a better acquisition than Werner
There has been plenty of talk surrounding loanee Timo Werner’s long-term future, with Spurs retaining an option to sign him permanently for around £15 million.
While manager Ange Postecoglou has opened the door to potentially retaining Werner’s services, there are better options on the market the club should explore.
Werner was brought in at a time when Spurs were in dire need of some attacking reinforcements and he has undoubtedly played his part in their push for top four.
The 28-year-old has contributed two goals and three assists in 11 Premier League games since joining the club, but his performances haven’t been convincing enough to warrant a permanent transfer.
Spurs would be better served investing that money in a high-profile talent like Williams who has proven himself in the Spanish top flight, helping his side to a first trophy in nearly a decade.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have also been touted as possible destinations for the youngster who has a release clause valued at €50m.
If Spurs want to establish themselves as title contenders, talents such as Williams should be the focus of the recruitment team to help close the gap on the top three.
