Tonali faces 50 fresh charges for breaching betting rules in England

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for breaching betting rules between August 12 and October 12, 2023.

The former AC Milan star has been slammed for betting 50 times, breaking the FA’s rule E8. He has until April 4 to respond.

Tonali could face another lengthy ban for breaking the gambling rules in England following his move from Milan.

The 23-year-old received a 10-month ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October for breaking betting rules during his time with the Rossoneri.

Consequently, the FA started investigating whether he placed bets following his move to Tyneside. Based on the statement by the FA, it appears the Italian international was betting while under investigation for gambling.

The Italian midfielder cannot participate in any matches for his club and the national team throughout the entire 10-month suspension period and now faces further punishment following the new investigation into his gambling problems.

Newcastle released a statement on their official website: “Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.

“Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations, and he retains the club’s full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

Tonali’s situation highlights the clutches of a serious addiction. A ban is a deterrent, but there needs to be a focus on rehabilitation.

A lengthy suspension, on top of the existing one, may hinder his career but won’t address the root cause.
