Romeo Lavia sidelined for the rest of the season

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia has been ruled out for the remainder of the season following a setback in his recovery from injury.

The 20-year-old, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in a big-money move from Southampton last summer, has struggled with injuries throughout his first year at the club.

After missing the first four months with an ankle issue, Lavia finally made his debut in December.

However, his return to action was short-lived as he sustained a serious thigh injury during a match against Crystal Palace despite playing just over half an hour.

Recent medical assessments have now revealed that the injury is worse than initially expected, forcing Lavia onto the sidelines for the rest of the campaign.

This is a major setback as Lavia was keen to play a key role in the latter stages of the season, with Chelsea looking to put together a strong end to what has been a largely underwhelming campaign to date.

Heading into the final run of matches after the March international break, Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League table. They are only three points off Brighton & Hove Albion in eighth place, which could be enough to guarantee European football next year.

The Blues also have an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on the horizon as they strive to reach a second domestic cup final.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be focused on securing a third successive victory against Burnley on Saturday.
